How to Measure Your Bed for Bedding
A familiar size name is a useful starting point. The measurements are what tell you whether a piece will actually work. Keep a tape measure handy and write down the numbers before you shop.
1. Measure the mattress, including its depth
Measure across the top from side to side, then from head to foot. Measure the depth from the bottom edge to the highest point, including a topper if you normally use one. For a fitted sheet, the pocket depth needs to accommodate that whole height. A mattress label alone will not tell you whether the corners will fit.
| Common U.S. mattress | Typical width × length |
|---|---|
| Twin | 38 × 75 in |
| Twin XL | 38 × 80 in |
| Full | 54 × 75 in |
| Queen | 60 × 80 in |
| King | 76 × 80 in |
| California King | 72 × 84 in |
These are mattress reference sizes, not a promise that every sheet, cover or insert uses the same dimensions. Measure your own mattress. If a fitted sheet listing does not document a pocket depth, do not assume that it fits a deep mattress.
2. Match a cover to the insert you already have
Lay your duvet insert flat and measure it from seam to seam. Compare those numbers with the duvet cover dimensions for the selected product option. Covers in this collection may use measured metric sizing rather than a standard U.S. insert format. A 200 × 230 cm cover is approximately 78.7 × 90.6 in; it is different from a 90 × 90 in insert even when both are described with a familiar bed-size name elsewhere.
A duvet cover is an empty fabric shell. It needs a separate insert unless the product package list specifically says one is included.
3. Decide how much coverlet drop you like
For an approximate side drop, subtract mattress width from coverlet width and divide by two. A 90 in wide coverlet on a 60 in wide mattress gives roughly 15 in on each side when centered. Compare that result with the mattress depth and the amount of bed frame you want to show.
Length needs a separate check. Think about whether you will pull the coverlet to the head of the bed, fold it back below the pillows, or tuck it at the foot. A photograph cannot tell you how the same piece will fall on a different mattress.
4. Check the pillows and the package list
Measure the pillow inserts you plan to use, including their thickness. Compare the case measurements with them; different case lengths can look similar in photographs. Check the number of cases and whether the listing is a single piece, pair or larger set. The larger the set, the more useful it is to tick off every included piece before ordering.
Before you add to the bag
- Write down mattress width, length and depth.
- Match the cover’s actual dimensions with the insert.
- Calculate side drop for a blanket or coverlet.
- Read the selected option and complete package contents.
